Kit spotted on mountain walk

Such is our dependence on earthmoving machines that shape the world we live in, it’s a fact that you can’t go very far without seeing one somewhere when you go on holiday. Having said that, I was not expecting to see photos of machines high up in the mountains in Switzerland, in the shadow of the famous Eiger mountain, where my son and his uncle are currently enjoying a walking and adventure sports holiday. Making their way through a valley between Lauterbrunnen & Wengen on Sunday morning on route to Kleine Scheidegg, they came across a batch of machines which look as though they are being used to restore the pathway, which obviously gets run down over time in this popular area for walkers and mountain climbers. The unidentified Liebherr model above is sporting a screening bucket attachment from Finnish manufacturer Allu and is being used to recycle the footpath material. The screening bucket is mounted below a powertilt attachment. A bit of Cat spotting in the mountains now, featuring this Caterpillar excavator which is possibly a 315C model in attendance on the same stretch of work. A bit further along the pathway they came across this 8.5 tonne Kaiser Spyder X walking excavator. These machines are a more common sight in mountainous locations, due to their almost unbelievable ability to work on steep mountain slopes. Finally in this batch of photos this French manufactured Mecalac 8 MCR compact excavator. These typically French designed machines are still a rare sight in the UK, but are popular on mainland Europe where they are often spotted switching from excavator to loader mode and using their unusual geometry boom to good effect on tight sites. Reader’s holiday digger shots are always a welcome addition to the blog page, so if you spot something, please don’t hesitate to send it into us at, nickydrew16 at btinternet.com using the usual @ email format.
