KT Montgomery commits to CAT for fleet expansion

Scottish plant-hire company KT Montgomery has invested £8 million in new Cat machines from Finning UK & Ireland as it expands its fleet ahead of major earthworks, highways, quarrying, aggregates and energy infrastructure projects.

The Kilmarnock-based business has made a series of major Cat purchases during the first half of 2026, with the manufacturer’s equipment now accounting for around 80% of its fleet. Older machines are being sold as part of a strategy to keep the fleet modern and up to date.

KT Montgomery operates from depots in Galston, Irvine and Muir of Ord, supplying equipment across the UK from Cornwall to Shetland. Its work covers road construction, bulk earthworks, quarrying and aggregate operations.

Our first new Cat machine was purchased from Finning in 2012, and they have been a solid partner ever since. We are proud to have been Finning's largest Scottish-based customer for five consecutive years, which reflects the strength of our relationship and our continued confidence in the Cat product and the support Finning provides.

“With several highway projects moving forward and major electricity transmission projects planned across the north of Scotland, there is a clear pipeline of work ahead. This investment gives us the confidence to deliver, backed by Finning's support and the reliability of the Cat product, as we continue building KT Montgomery into one of the country's leading plant-hire businesses.

“We have also gone much further on specification. We want customers hiring from us to know they are getting the latest equipment, with technology that helps operators work more efficiently and safely on site.”

KT Montgomery Operations Director Sean McNulty added: “Finning is invaluable to our business. We receive the same high level of support and service throughout the UK, something many other suppliers cannot match.”

The order includes Cat 308, 313, 320, 336 and 352 next-generation excavators, alongside D2, D3, D4, D5 and D6 dozers and CS13 and CS16 vibratory soil compactors. The additions will further expand what the company describes as Scotland’s largest roller fleet.

The machines are equipped with a range of technology, including Trimble Earthworks machine control, Cat E-Fence and 360-degree camera systems.

The £8m investment also includes aftermarket support and a premium warranty package providing cover for up to 5,000 operating hours across hydraulic, powertrain and technology components.
