Liebherr integrates MiC 4.0 BUS to Gen 8 excavators
Liebherr is integrating the cross-manufacturer MiC 4.0 BUS communication standard into its Generation 8 wheeled excavators, allowing compatible attachments to exchange operating data automatically with the carrier machine.
The standardised interface is designed to simplify attachment changes, reduce installation requirements and improve the integration of specialist equipment into everyday operations.
Machine and attachment communication
When a MiC 4.0-ready attachment is connected, information including its type, serial number and operating parameters, such as oil pressure and flow rate, is automatically transferred to the excavator. This removes the need for operators to enter the information manually and simplifies the use of intelligent attachments, including tiltrotators. Liebherr says the system will also help reduce the time and effort previously required to integrate complex attachments. Connecting equipment such as tiltrotators has often involved modifications to the carrier machine, potentially affecting existing approvals and conformity assessments, including CE marking. The MiC 4.0 BUS is intended to simplify this process, reducing installation time and potential integration risks.
Attachment data and fleet management
The communication standard also provides a route to greater visibility of attachment use across a fleet. Information such as operating hours, usage and maintenance status can in future be accessed through Liebherr's MyLiebherr Maintenance & Performance customer portal. This will allow fleet managers to monitor attachment utilisation, plan maintenance and improve equipment availability, helping to make fleet operations more efficient.
Cross-manufacturer compatibility
A further benefit is the ability to transfer compatible attachments between MiC 4.0-ready carrier machines, including equipment from different manufacturers. Liebherr says this will provide greater flexibility for operators managing mixed fleets, while making it easier to deploy specialist attachments across different machines.
