Liebherr launches new 50-tonne excavators

Liebherr's Generation 8 machinery line-up has expanded once again with the unveiling of three new crawler excavators in the 50-tonne class. The R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8 make their world premiere at steinexpo this week.

Designed for applications ranging from general earthmoving and quarrying through to heavy-duty mining, the three new machines combine Liebherr’s latest technologies with a focus on durability, productivity and ease of maintenance.

The R 948 G8 is aimed primarily at earthmoving applications, featuring an LC undercarriage, specialist equipment and optimised engine performance designed to reduce fuel consumption without compromising productivity. The R 952 G8 is the most versatile of the three, offering three undercarriage options, a wide choice of equipment configurations and increased engine power.

At the top of the range, the R 958 G8 has been developed for demanding mining applications. It features an S-HD undercarriage, mass excavation equipment and a range of options designed specifically for heavy-duty operation.

All three models use reinforced structures incorporating high-strength steels and castings, while maintenance access has been improved with an easily accessible engine platform, secure access points and automatic central lubrication.

Liebherr has also introduced a range of assistance and efficiency systems. Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE) can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10%, while Bucket Fill Assist automates the bucket-filling process. Modetronic adjusts machine parameters according to the application and operating conditions.

The machines also feature an integrated passive 2D machine control system developed with Leica Geosystems, alongside a dynamic weighing system providing 500 machine hours as standard. A 3D control system is available as an option.

Inside the cab, the new excavators feature Liebherr’s latest emCAB operator’s cab and INTUSI human-machine interface, with redesigned controls and electric joysticks intended to improve comfort, precision and ease of operation.

Safety equipment includes camera assistance systems as standard, with an optional Skyview 360° system providing a bird’s-eye view around the machine. Improved access platforms and lower-level refuelling and filling points further enhance day-to-day safety and serviceability.
