New Cat in Cornwall

Chris has long been a fan of Caterpillar products and it came as no surprise to me to hear that he was going to upgrade one of his existing Cat 320E’s to the latest all singing, all dancing 323’s. Chris currently runs 1 x Caterpillar 320E hydraulic excavator, 1 x Caterpillar 311F L RR reduced radius hydraulic excavator and 1 x Caterpillar D6N dozer which is fitted with Cat Grade Control 2D system supported by SITECH and a PAT (Power Angle Tilt) blade and these are now joined by the 323 which is a massive leap forward in excavator technology. In addition to this Cat equipment Chris runs a couple of 300hp Fendt tractors with 20 tonne dump trailers and Bomag compaction equipment. The new machine which was supplied by Finning UK & Ireland, has been put straight to work building an extension to the car park and premises of local car dealership Hawkins Motor Group at their Blackwater based Hyundai and Citroen garage and it was there that we caught up with the new Cat. Chris was clearly impressed with his new addition to the fleet especially with the considerable improvements inside the cab. Chris said, “I really like the layout inside and the new wider seat is a vast improvement on the old E series model’s”. Chris said he found all the technology on the touch screen a bit daunting, but fortunately he has his young 15-year old son Harry on hand to offer a masterclass on such things, as all kids from the X Box generation can do these days! Young Harry is actively involved in the business when time permits, Chris takes up the story, “Harry has always been out on the machines with me from a very young age and he just loves the kit, over the past 2 – 3 years he has been wanting to drive them and currently undertakes bits and pieces under my supervision in the time honoured way that many of us will relate too, he has already become a fairly competent young operator at home around the yard”. With the new 323 only having arrived the day before our visit Harry was eager to get “hands on” with the machine and what better time to do so then while we were there to capture it on video.
