Old workhorses at rest

This Aveling Barford motor grader has been with the company for many years and just keeps plodding on as is customary for these old girls. In fact I was told that this machine had only recently come back into the yard after a 6 month hire cleaning up haul roads. All credit to the machine that it can still put in a shift when needed. During my time with the company in 96/97 this was the main grader on site at the massive Hams Hall job in Coleshill, before it was replaced on the fleet by a Bomag/HBM model. Another great old tool on the fleet in years gone by was this Caterpillar 955L traxcavator which is lying slightly overgrown out the back of the workshop with other old Cats. I used to enjoy watching this machine being worked, in the hands of Pat or Seamus King, back in the day. Another Cat tracked shovel at rest is this 941B model. All these machines are still runners but have been superseded in the fleet by later 953C and 963C models as part of the fleet upgrade scheme. Finally in another corner of the yard partially covered up by a tarpaulin is a rare Terex dozer, which I believe is a Detroit Diesel powered 8230 model. This machine is a heavy beast and a powerful bit of kit too, but has been mothballed for many years now. Look out for my article on James King Plant current operations, in a future edition of Earthmovers Magazine over the coming months, including news on their new Hyundai arrivals.
