Sunshine and shiny kit at the Reeds Open Day

The event had a real family day out feel to it and there was plenty to see and do. It’s always nice for the wives and children to see what hubby/daddy does for a living and let’s face it, kids love diggers, so getting up close and personal with them is a dream come true for the youngsters. Reed Construction and Engineering is a real multi-faceted business, perhaps more well known in recent years as one of the Cat Compact Dealers, talking about that side of things Managing Director Tom Reed said, “It’s been a great addition to our business and we have had a lot of success in our area especially with the 8 tonne class 308E2 CR midi excavator which has been very well received by our customers”. There was a good selection of Caterpillar kit for visitors to see with the largest being this 914K wheeled loader in waste spec, including solid tyres, high lift loader arms and an Ulrich Hi-Tip bucket. But there is a lot more to Reeds than just Cat equipment, its soil stabilisation side of the business is one of its speciality services and some of its interesting equipment for this sector was on display. The new Spread Master TS10P has been designed and manufactured by Reeds and comes complete with Kubota powerpack and hydraulics, electro hydraulic controls operated from the cab of dozer or towing vehicle and looks to be a quality piece of kit. Reeds tractors of choice are from the Fendt stable and there were examples from their fleet on display including this 724 Vario model which was displayed with front and rear mounted attachments from another German manufacturer Stehr, in this instance a grader to the rear and a triple compaction plate set up on the front. Reeds are also dealers for Stehr equipment. Another recent addition to Reeds sales portfolio is the Giant (Tobroco) range of compact loaders, skid steers and telehandlers. Examples on display from the Dutch based manufacturer included this V5003 Tele HD telescopic handler. Reeds range of products for sale is a truly global affair and another example of this is the range of stone crushing equipment from Finnish manufacturer Suokone Oy. Its Meri Crusher range is designed for recycling of forestry tracks but can be applied to a wide variety of jobs. Closer to home and Reeds have recently become dealers for the Gyru-Star range of compact screening systems which are designed and built in Gloucester, UK, by Wheatway Solutions Limited. The company produce an 8 model range suitable for excavators from 1 tonne up to just under 20 tonne, which are fitted with tough, durable and long lasting poly stars at the business end! The Gyru-Star 3-60E model was being put through its paces during the open day mounted on a Caterpillar 305E2 CR 5 tonne class mini excavator and looked like a great piece of kit for the small builder and contractor wanting to cut down on waste materials on site. We will be paying this company a visit in due course with our Earthmovers hat on. And finally it was a pleasure to meet up with Andrew Hicks owner of Keen Attachments who was displaying a selection of their UK built buckets, tilt buckets and quick couplers. Most of the stock machines on display were sporting buckets or attachments from Keen on the day. All in all a great afternoon out and I thank Tom Reed for the invitation, thanks must also go to David Chidgey for keeping me company and introducing me to Andrew Hicks.
