Swedish operator gets hands on with Volvo’s new E Series excavator

Launched at the recent Conexpo show in Las Vegas the Volvo EC380 alongside the EC480 are the first machines to gain E series status. Featuring a powerful Tier 4 final Volvo D13 engine, the machine is claimed to be extremely productive, with reduced fuel consumption, but in addition can also deliver higher digging breakout forces. Peter took to the seat of this new machine at an event organised by the Swedish dealers Swecon in Stockholm. Talking about his experience in the machine Peter said, “As this small show was held in an old gravel pit there wasn’t really much material to put the machine to the test, but from my short time on the sticks I could feel it was a nice smooth running machine, having said that I did think that the slew was a bit erratic, but overall I liked the machine a lot more than the C series models. As for the D series I cannot really comment as I have not operated one of those so far”. Peter continued, “As for the appearance of the new E series, well I feel it looks the same as the latest E series Cat machines, which if I am brutally honest are pretty ugly things in my opinion! But like all new machines I guess we will get used to the new style”. Peter is keen to get one of these machines on a real live site in the future, where he would really be able to put it through its paces. I will be trying to arrange a test drive for myself over the coming months too and I suspect we will get to see the new EC380E L in the metal at the upcoming Hillhead quarry & mining exhibition in Buxton, Derbyshire, next month.
