“Baby” mining excavator was a BIG crowd puller

Although Liebherr’s R 9200 was not the largest excavator on show at Bauma it was still an impressive sight and one that drew large crowds throughout the duration of the show, especially when it was fired up and put through the motions.

“Baby” mining excavator was a BIG crowd puller
In 2013 Liebherr displayed the R 9400 in its face shovel configuration this time around we were treated to the new R 9200 sporting a backhoe configuration and fitted with a 12.5m3 bucket which was making its first public appearance at Bauma. It’s fair to say that machines like this are rarely seen by members of the public and are usually only seen working in large countries like Australia, Canada and North America, so to get up close and personal with such a gargantuan is very rare. DSC_0077 This 200 tonne class machine is built just across the channel from us at Liebherr’s facility in Colmar, France which is a place that is definitely on my wish list for a factory visit one day! The machine is ideally matched with mining trucks up to 140 tonnes in capacity which it can generally fill in around 5 passes. DSC_0072 The R 9200 takes it power from a Cummins QSK38 diesel engine which offers a power output rating of 810kw (1,086hp). Efficient engine and hydraulic operation is assured by the patented Litronic Plus system similar to that which we see across the Liebherr excavator range. DSC_0073 I was told that since its launch 11 of these machines have been sold, some of which are still being manufactured and 4 of them have been delivered to the customers and are already working in the field. The machine on stand at Bauma already had its new owners name on it, Darma Henwa are an Indonesian mining company and it is believed the machine will be stripped down and shipped to them after the show is over. DSC_0078 I was one of the lucky group of individuals who was invited to take a look inside the cab of the 200 tonner, it would have been fabulous to have a quick go on the machine, but I never asked to question as I feared the rejection! Maybe I will get lucky in the future. As an operator, you certainly could not complain about lack of space inside the cab, which was big enough to hold a small party in, there was even a spare passenger seat to the rear left of the operators position.
