Old School Operator, Modern Thinking

During my friend and industry colleague Peter Haddock’s South West Connected Tour last year, he visited our friends at well-known Liskeard based business Steve Hoskin Construction (SHC), where he got to meet an equally well-known veteran operator Simon Jones who has adopted the use of 3D machine control.

Old School Operator, Modern Thinking

Simon is 58 years old and has been operating machines for some 25 years. For just over 12 months now Simon has been using Leica Geosystems 3D Machine Control which was fitted to the Develon DX225LC-7 that he operates by local dealer One Point Survey.

Like so many ‘old school’ operators, myself included, he was sceptical at first, but he quickly got the hang of it. Simon said, “I always say to other operators that it's like a guide that replaces the old stakes in the ground”.

"The difference is that I get a 3D model sent to the machine by my engineering colleague Harry. And this means I can track to the next plot and get on with the job as I haven't got to wait for an engineer to set out the levels."

Pictured Above: Simon Jones has been operating machines for over 25 years.

It has to be said, these systems are entirely changing the way we work on sites, it’s the future and its right here, right now, and those who don’t embrace it, will simply be left behind.
