Unusual Cat spotted

Something a bit different now for a Monday morning here on the Digger Man Blog, our good friend Gary Major has been out and about in the USA recently and spotted a machine that he had not seen before and wondered what it was.

Unusual Cat spotted
The machine in question which Gary spotted in the city of Roswell in Georgia, was a Caterpillar RM-250C Road Reclaimer or Soil Stabilization unit. These strange looking machines are not something you see every day and are a somewhat specialist bit of kit. img_5898 The machines are used to pulverize the asphalt layer or soil and work like a giant food mixer by mixing in binding materials like cement which will serve to stabilize deteriorated roads or ground surfaces. The machine not only mixes the material but also levels it out again ready for final trimming by a dozer or motor grader. img_5899 The RM-250C has long been discontinued in the Cat range but the product is still sold in two sizes, with the RM300 and the RM500B models. During one of my visits to Cat’s facility in Malaga back in 2011 an example of the RM500 was displayed during the main demonstration. The current RM500B is powered by a Cat C15 ACERT engine with a power output rating of 546hp (407kw) while the smaller RM300 is powered by a Cat C11 ACERT engine of some 350hp (261kw). img_1974 To find out more about these specialist machines check out this promotional video from Caterpillar.
We thank Gary for sending in the photos of the RM-250C and for raising my interest in these unusual machines.
