Volvo’s New “Ducks” Look the Business

The latest new generation of Volvo EWR150 and EWR170 short-tail swing wheeled excavators are now available in Europe.

Volvo’s New “Ducks” Look the Business

Volvo Construction Equipment has built a great reputation for manufacturing world class wheeled excavators, and this latest generation of machines looks set to continue that trend. Not only do they look good, they have also been designed to deliver more power, precision, and improved safety in the ever-congested urban job sites.

The ever popular 15-tonne class size now benefits from a 10% increase in engine power, which Volvo say will help operators when tackling heavy lifting operations and tough excavation work, enabling them to work more efficiently and safely.

Talking of safety, on 2026 models Volvo are introducing what they describe as an industry-first innovation: a patented electrically folding access ladder, enabling easier access up into the cabin, which for someone with short legs like me, will be a blessing in disguise.

The new (optional) four-wheel steering system is always game changer in urban areas offering much increased manoeuvrability in tight spaces especially when working in single lane closure scenarios.

The new models also benefit from larger lift cylinders and a redesigned two-piece boom for extended reach and superior lifting capability. The EWR150 now matches the EWR170 with a robust 115kW engine—delivering nearly 10% more power than its predecessor. Improved swing torque (up by 10%) further supports faster, more controlled machine movements and efficient attachment handling.

Operators can configure their machines to suit specific tasks. The EWR150 offers arm lengths of 2.0m, 2.4m and 2.6m, while the EWR170 provides 2.0m, 2.5m and 3.1m options. Customers can also select from various undercarriage configurations, including outriggers, blades, or no equipment on the front and rear.

Volvo excavators have long been respected for their high levels of cab comfort, and the updated cabin design takes that to another level as it has been thoughtfully redesigned, offering superior visibility, minimal noise and intuitive control. A 12.8” touchscreen integrated into the right-hand console places all essential information—climate controls, media, camera views and machine status—at the operator’s fingertips.

Other ergonomic improvements include a new four-level adjustable seat with heating and cooling, a choice of updated armrests, wireless charging, ample in-cab storage and optional features such as a sunshade and air compressor for cab cleaning. Electrically heated, adjustable side mirrors further enhance safety and convenience.

I would expect to see one of these in the West Country in due course, if it happens, I will be out to see it for a full story in Earthmovers Magazine.
