Liebherr’s big dumptruck is an icon at Bauma

As icons at Bauma go they don’t come much bigger than the dumptruck on display at the corner of Liebherr’s stand, the huge truck is always parked alongside one of the main routes through the showground and pleases crowds all through the week.

Liebherr’s big dumptruck is an icon at Bauma
Manufactured at it's facility in the USA the T 264 ultra-class mining truck was back this year for a second appearance at Bauma, having first being unveiled at the 2013 event. Bauma is the only chance for the public to see a Liebherr mining truck in Europe as machines of this size are usually only ever seen in large surface mines in countries like America and Australia. DSC_0074 The 220-tonne size class T 264 definitely has the X factor with the visitors and is a focal point on the whole showground, in fact I lost track of how many people I spoke too on the phone who said, “I will meet you behind the big dumptruck” lets be honest, you could never miss it could you! DSC_0075 The T 264 has a rated payload capacity of 244 tons and features an electric drive system. The efficient Litronic Plus AC drive system and a high-power engine (up to 2,700 hp / 2,013 kW) to yield higher speeds on grade. For superior productivity, the T 264’s hydraulic system offers efficient dump hoist performance that promotes fast cycle times. Developed and built by Liebherr, the proven Litronic Plus drive system determines the optimal way to extract power from the diesel engine. The T 264 features high-powered, frictionless dynamic braking. The AC drive system delivers up to 4,425 hp / 3,300 kW of electric dynamic braking, reducing engine loading and fuel consumption. DSC_0085 The T 264 is size matched to work with the company’s 800 tonne class mining excavator the R 9800, as well as electric shovels and large wheeled loading shovels. liebherr-t264-mining-truck-72dpi The guys at Liebherr kindly supplied us with some fun facts & figures about the T 264.   If the truck were to drive onto the basketball court in the Audi Dome (Munich, Germany), it would take up nearly the entire width of the court The truck is as tall as the average two-storied house The truck is rated to carry a payload equivalent to the weight of 40 African elephants. The volume of the truck’s dump body can hold about 906,667 cups of coffee The T 264 tyres are the height of two Shire Horses – the height at the withers of these largest horses of the world is approx. 1.8 m on average. Check out this video I shot of the team emptying the skip after the heavy rain storm at Bauma. I think you will agree, whichever way you look at the T 264, it’s an impressive bit of kit!
