Maximum detail on Classic Construction Models (CCM) range of 1:48th scale Caterpillar 375L machines

Classic Construction Models (CCM) have set out to deliver another three exceptionally detailed 1:48 scale die-cast models of Caterpillar 375L machines. In this guest blog post by fellow Earthmovers contributor and published book author David Wylie, he reviews this stunning model.

Maximum detail on Classic Construction Models (CCM) range of 1:48th scale Caterpillar 375L machines

Using the Caterpillar 375L undercarriage and upperstructure as a base model, they offer collectors a choice of three different models, a standard excavator with two buckets and a hitch, a mass excavation model and finally a demolition machine, with a Cat MP40 Shear attachment and cab guarding.

Caterpillar introduced the 375L in 1992, this 75-metric ton excavator was designed with versatility in mind, as it included a choice of 3 available booms, 7 sticks, and 9 buckets - depending on the application.  A variety of work tools were also available to fit virtually any large jobsite.

The redesigned operator’s cab on the 375L included a high-definition LCD display, to keep operators informed of the machine’s status as well as a three-level alert system which informs of potential component issues or system problems before costly issues occur.

Starting with the demolition model, at first glance, it comes equipped with a long reach boom, R4.4H stick, MP40 shears, and protective screens on the cab.

The MP40 rotating shears attachment is highly detailed with exceptional sharp castings, for added realism the warning signs and CAT logos are crisp and also highly detailed.

The MP40 jaw cylinder has a nice balance between smooth action and sufficient resistance to grip and pose objects in the jaw.

The long reach boom and R4.4H stick provide good reach and the range of movement, accurate to the real machine.  This demolition model is the only one of the three with additional auxiliary hydraulic pipes running up the boom to feed the rotating sheer attachment.

The cab guarding is accurate and nicely finished

CCM have gone the extra mile on the undercarriage of all three models, as it actually extends and retracts by about 6-7mm each side to mirror the scale and function of the real machine for ease of transport on the highway!

Turning our attention to the Mass Excavator model. Like the demolition model, there is a good range of front end equipment movement and stiffness to pose the machine. The Mass Excavator bucket is nicely detailed too, with accurate and sharp details on all the bucket teeth and ware parts.

The standard 375L excavator model comes with two buckets - 2.4m3 for trench bucket and bigger 3.8m3 for GP bucket - mounting bolts and a tool to tighten the bolts. CCM had considered a working quick hitch, but experience has shown, if not handled correctly it was easily broken, and responding to customer feedback /requests, it was decided to produce the 375L with a strong bolt /pin design - which I think looks and works really well.

The cab on all three models is up to the usual high standards of other CCM models. It has an accurately detailed opening door, LCD dash display and all the finely detailed operating and warning signs on the cab windows and the highly detailed operators’ seat.  The handrails around the machine are also well represented.

Another area of high detail is the machine’s accurately replicated Caterpillar logos, miniature markings, safety and warning labels that have been approved by Caterpillar for accuracy.

The undercarriage on all three models is also accurately represented, with a high clearance between the upper structure and the track pads. The die-cast track pads are incredibly finely detailed, with super-sharp double grousers and hex headed bolts showing, also note the bolt head details on the drive motor end covers.  The 375 L (L = long undercarriage) has the longer undercarriage option which is designed to provide additional flotation in soft underfoot conditions.

All three models have engine and hydraulic pump bay doors that fully open to reveal the Turbocharged and aftercooled, Cat 3406C-ATAAC Engine with direct injection fuel system and Air to Air Aftercooler. And the two variable-displacement, axial-piston hydraulic pumps and filters that power the boom, stick, bucket and travel motors.

The three new Cat 375L machines are a welcome addition to CCM’s growing range of 1:48 scale models. These are limited to a production run of just 750 per version, and come with a limited edition numbered and signed miniature specification book of the real machine.

In conclusion, CCM is renowned for their attention to detail, skilled model makers and their three versions of the Cat 375L does not disappoint.

All three versions of the Cat 375L are on sale and priced at $259.95 To order or checkout CCM’s other available and upcoming  models,  go to https://ccmodels.com/product-category/available-products/  and it’s wise to order soon,  before they sell out!
