Once loved now abandoned (Part Two)

Continuing our look at some abandoned classic plant which was discovered by our resident man “down under” Michael Bullock during a visit home to Herefordshire last year.

Amongst the examples of Caterpillar machinery at rest was this fine old D4D dozer, which was fitted with wide pads and what looks like a Westlode cab from the days when H. Leverton was a main dealer for Cat products. This cracking example of a Cat classic is just crying out for a restoration job. Another classic model now, from the Volvo BM stable. Introduced in 1979 the Volvo DR861 was the first ADT to be offered by the Swedish company featuring an all-wheel-drive (6x6) option and was often hailed as one of the best dumptruck’s of its kind back in the day. This example was once owned by Dorset based Mark Farwell Plant Hire who keen readers may recall we featured in issue 123 of Earthmovers Magazine. Here is a rare example of a JCB 2. This was JCB’s smaller brother to the hugely successful JCB 3 and 3C models. These machines were primarily aimed at councils and agricultural contracting firms in their various guises. They were only produced from 1963 to 1968 when the model was discontinued due to low volume of sales. Another JCB nestling next to a rusting 3C is this JCB 818 Super. This 18 tonne class excavator featured JCB’s Powerslide boom, a system which was unique to JCB at the time, apart from Poclain’s version which was fully hydraulic. This model dates from the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s. Representing a long gone British dumptruck manufacturer was this early 1980’s example of a Haulamatic A625 all-wheel-drive (6 x 6) model. This last shot from Michael shows just how much old kit is lying in this location. It’s certainly a place I would like to visit one day. I am sure there are many more undiscovered gems at rest there which have not yet been caught on camera! As ever the Digger Man Blog thanks Michael for sharing these photos with us.
